Donvale

2017

On acreage, the garden surrounding this beautiful English-style Country House had been let go and in was in desperate need of taming.  Over an initial, staged, 2 year period, Desired Landscapes tackled around 1 acre of overgrown garden beds, to create beautiful garden function, purpose, and access.  On a sloping site, and located in semi-rural landscape setting, we have addressed site issues such as drainage, weed suppression and irrigation.  We have worked with and against a very crafty colony of rabbits and have worked to develop a planting plan that allow for the happy habitation of plants and people!

The resulting garden areas provide much opportunity for garden relaxation and pleasure.   Slate edged, trailing gravel pathways provide easy, meandering access through the garden.  A fully fenced vegetable plot with raised garden beds and a surrounding fruit orchard provide garden activity and food supply.  As you walk through the gardens, raised compost beds, and herb beds add to the Country Garden feel.  Planting updates have occurred to integrate the existing pool area to the productive garden areas.  Quiet areas such as the slated wall-seat provide opportunities for rest and quiet conversation.  A little bit of fun and play space has also been injected into the area with a very professional petanque pit.

This garden has been a little bit of a work in progress, and Desired Landscapes has been fortunate to work with the understanding owners of this property.  When we all first met, not one of us could really see the garden opportunities through the heavy overgrowth.  We all knew we were on a hill, but did not know what a good clear-out of vegetation would uncover.  During time, Desired Landscapes has worked to peel back the garden layers, and we have worked to suggest to the owners, the materials and garden proportions that are sensible within a very large garden site.  The garden elements that have been requested by the owners; petanque pit, vegetable plot, fruit orchard, herb beds and seating area have been spaced and proportioned to create an overall sense of belonging in the garden.  To integrate the garden areas, we have maintained a cypress pine finish in timber materials, and worked with slate for pathway borders and seats.
