Landscape Design Kew

For this landscape design in Kew, recognising that the front garden takes the morning sun, the owners considered that they would love to spend their mornings sipping coffee in the sun.  For this reason, Desired Landscapes sought approval and permits to raise the front fence to create a very private courtyard.  We removed all steps from the front garden, and ramped surfaces to assist the older owners.  We paved the garden areas in a consistent paver (Anston Paver, colour is Murray).  We added two small, bubbling water features  and filled the garden spaces with oriental inspired plants.  (Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum), Sacred Bamboo (Nandina domestica), Chinese Lantern (Abutilon), Japanese Andromeda (Pieris japonica) and small growing Rhododendron.  The overall effect feels tranquil, private and immersed in nature.  (Even in Kew, Melbourne)

Within the rear garden, we worked around an existing swimming pool, modernising with new paving to match across the site, and to change pool fencing to glass.  The owner’s other hobby included vegetable gardening, so space was segmented for raised vegetable planters, herb beds and an espaliered citrus and passionfruit area.  We have battled a few possums on this site, but in the end, our plants (and passionfruit) have grown up, and we all live a little more happily together.

The owners wanted a happy family garden, and some joyful elements have been included – most notably colourful plantings, a glass pool fence that was custom cut to wave shape through the garden, and the patchwork paving through the vegetable garden.
